It's tricky to rock a rhyme that's right on time, but tonight at Tate Theatre, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels may just tell his secret.
McDaniels, formerly of hip-hop group Run-DMC and who now has a successful solo act, was one-third of what was perhaps one of the most groundbreaking musical acts of the last three decades.
Aside from its momentous role in defining hip hop music, Run-DMC had a huge influence on the youth of America. So when it comes to addressing the past, present and future of this beloved genre, it is only appropriate that this man be a central figure.
Tonight, McDaniels kicks off the first of a seven-stop college tour. The evening is in partnership with University Union.
"Our group tries to bring a diverse selection of lecturers who will each target the interests of different students on campus," said junior Ashley Bozarth, head of Ideas and Issues for University Union. "Other Union members and I saw (McDaniels) speak at a conference and really enjoyed hearing what he had to say."
Kevin Macrea, the booking agent for the tour said that McDaniels will discuss the "beginning roots, evolution of and current state" of rap and hip hop music and culture. This will include a detailed discussion of his days in Run-DMC and its effect on him as a solo artist.
University Union hopes that the evolution and direction of hip-hop will appeal to students as well.
"We thought the subject of (McDaniel's) lecture is presently a very interesting and relevant issue. Since (he) was part of Run-DMC, he is obviously a very credible source of the subject."
But there is one undisclosed aspect of the lecture that many students are anticipating: Will he rap?
Macrea didn't guarantee anything.
"DMC enjoys very much speaking to and talking with young people," he said.
Come to Tate Theatre to see if he enjoys rapping to them as well.
